Second Month – Week by Week

In the second month of pregnancy, it is more likely that you become aware of the various changes happening in your body. Some or all of early pregnancy symptoms may be experienced by you.

Week 5

What’s happening to your baby ?

Embryo is now growing fast and is already taking a definite shape rather than being just a mass of cells. Heart and circulatory system are forming and you will soon be able to hear your baby’s heartbeat. Monitoring heartbeat is the most common way of checking baby’s well-being and you will soon see that your doctor uses a doppler to check your baby’s heartbeat at every visit.

Next is line the baby’s nervous system and brain which is also developing.

What’s happening to you ?

You will still have most early pregnancy signs and they will become more pronounced than last week. You may feel like sleeping the whole day even if you have not done anything at all.

Morning sickness will also come into picture. It can happen any time of the day and it may or may not accompany vomiting.

You may notice that you are going the bathroom frequently to urinate.

Checklist for Week 5

  • Make an appointment with your gynecologist for your prenatal checkup, if not already done.
  • No more alcohol or smoking.
  • Cut down on your caffeine intake, i.e. tea, coffee or colas.
  • Take small, frequent meals to counter morning sickness.
  • Make a habit of drinking lots of water.
  • Take your prenatal vitamins and supplements on time.

Other things on your mind

  • You may experience some cramping which is normal, but if you feel uneasy do not hesitate to inform your doctor about it.
  • If you do not feel morning sickness or usual symptoms associated with early pregnancy, do not worry. You are among the lucky few to escape it altogether or it may be just round the corner.
  • Your clothes may start to get a bit uncomfortable even though your are not showing yet. Wear loose, cotton clothes to keep comfortable.
