Mouth ulcers are white spots surrounded by a reddish, inflamed area that may appear in the inner cheeks, lips and gums. They can be quite painful while eating or chewing and feel sore.

There can be many reasons of mouth ulcers in kids and some children mat=y have them more often than the others. Some of the common reasons of mouth ulcers can be:

  • Deficiency of vitamins and minerals in body, quite often vitamin b12, zinc and iron
  • Child may have injured herself while brushing
  • Accidental biting of inner cheek or inner lip while chewing

1) Honey

Honey is a very effective remedy to soothe and cure mouth ulcer. Honey is a well-known anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties. Just apply a drop of honey to the sore area. You can apply it as many times as needed, till the sores heal completely. The best time to apply it is at bedtime so that it can be left as long as possible.

Honey is safe to be used inside mouth on mouth ulcers, as it is edible. Children also do not mind it because of its sweet taste. However, do not use it for babies below 1 year.

2) Tulsi Leaves

Tulsi is well known home remedy and immunity booster which has natural antipyretic and analgesic properties.  Its antibacterial properties help orally disinfect the affected area, and expedites the healing process.

Give few fresh tulsi leaves to chew for as long as possible. The antibacterial properties of tulsi leaves and extract will disinfect the area affected by mouth ulcers and help the sores in healing faster. Alternatively, you can also crush the tulsi leaves and apply on the sores. Rise with warm water afterwards.

3) Ghee

Ghee is another age-old magic remedy which has been used in India to cure mouth ulcers. Ghee is known to reduce swelling and help in reducing pain. Apply ghee on the sores generously and keep it as long as possible. You may rinse the mouth afterwards. The best time to apply it is at bedtime so that it can be left as long as possible.

4) Haldi + Ghee

Turmeric or haldi is also a magic ingredient present in every kitchen and is well-known for its antibacteriala nd healing properties. Mix a little turmeric powder with ghee to make a paste and apply this on the mouth ulcers. Keep for as long as possible. Rise with warm water afterwards.

5) Coconut Oil

Similar to ghee and honey, coconut oil includes antimicrobial properties that help to reduce mouth ulcers naturally. It also lubricates the sore which soothes the pain. Simply apply a bit of edible, organic coconut oil to the mouth ulcers and leave it. The best time to apply it is at bedtime so that it can be left as long as possible.

6) Coconut milk/ coconut water rinse

Many people swear by the effectiveness of coconut water and coconut milk when it comes to healing the mouth ulcers. Both are supposed to be effective and their sweet taste makes it appealing to kids too.

7) Baking soda paste

Baking soda is also a well known kitchen ingredient which is used to heal mouth ulcers. The baking soda neutralises the acid formed in the mouth ulcer, which helps in treating the canker sores.
Make a thick paste of baking soda and a few drops of water. Apply this paste on the area affected by mouth ulcers and leave it for as long as possible. Once the paste has dried, wash it off using warm water.

8) Salt water gargle

Salt also has antibacterial properties and it salt water gargles and rinses are used to soothe conditions like sore throat and toothache. The same can be used to alleviate mouth ulcers too. Add a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinse the mouth well a few times a day.

9) Apple cider vinegar

Similar to salt water rinse, many poeple swear by apple cider vinegar rinses to help cure mouth ulcers. Add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water and use it to rinse the mouth well.

10) No spicy food

While you or your child is suffering from mouth ulcers, avoid all kinds of spicy and hot food as that can cause more pain.

11) Avoid hot drinks

Very hot drinks can also lead to more pain as the area affected by mouth ulcers is sensitive, so avoid very hot drinks or food till they get healed. You can take lukewarm food and drinks if you want.

12) Avoid acidic fruits

Acidic fruits like lemon, lime etc. can also cause pain in the area affected by mouth ulcers. Avoid such fruits till the mouth ulcers heal completely.

  • Mouth ulcers can occur in different individuals due to different reasons, so not all remedies may be effective in all kinds of ulcers.
  • If mouth ulcers are recurring due to vitamin deficiency, then the underlying deficiency must be cured with the help of medical advice. Doctor may prescribe vitamin supplements etc. to treat the deficiency.
  • If a particular remedy seem to be causing more trouble than good, then discontinue it and try some other remedy.
