Benefits of carrots for babies and toddlers
Carrots are a wonderful first food. We have shared recipes for carrot puree, carrot soups , which form a good first food for babies below 1 year. Once babies get used to complex food, finger foods form a wonderful addition to their meals and snacks. Vegetable sticks are great are finger foods. Carrot sticks were a favourite with my toddler and you can give these to babies above 10 months without seasoning and to toddlers after 1 year with nice seasonings to expand their palate.
Carrots are full of nutrition and one medium-sized carrot (about 60g) provides 25 calories, 0.5g of protein, 6g of carbohydrates, and 0g of fat. Carrots are good source of fiber, vitamin A and vitamin K.
According to USDA, one serving or half cup of carrots provide:
- 25 calories
- 6 grams of carbohydrates
- 2 grams of fiber
- 3 grams of sugar
- 0.5 grams of protein
One serving of carrots can provide you with:
- 73% of your daily requirement of vitamin A
- 9% of your daily vitamin K
- 8% of your daily potassium and fiber
- 5% of your daily vitamin C
- 2% of your daily calcium and iron
How to make carrot sticks for babies ( 10+ months old)
Ingredients to make Carrot sticks
Carrots (surprise surprise!! :)) 1-2
Butter – 1 table spoon
Recipe for Carrot sticks
Wash and dry the carrots well.
Peel the carrots after cutting off the ends.
Cut the carrots into thin sticks which the child can hold easily. The sticks should neither be too thick nor too thin. very thin stick will lose their shape in cooking and too thick sticks may be a choking hazard.
Boil water in a steamer. Add the prepared carrot sticks to the steaming basket and steam them for 10 minutes or till soft yet firm to hold. They should not turn mushy.
You may also cook the carrots by boiling them directly, making sure not to overcook them. If you use the boiling method, ensure that you use just enough water and not throw the water away. You may use the water in dal or soup.
Take the carrot stick out of the steamer and allow them to cool a bit.
In a pan, add 1 tbsp butter and melt it.
Add the parboiled carrot sticks to butter and saute for a minute.
Take them out and serve it to your almost toddler to enjoy.
How to make carrot sticks for Toddlers ( 1+ year old)
After 1 year, babies’ taste buds and digestive system is developed enough to explore and handle more complex flavours.
You can add seasoning like salt, pepper, italian seasoning etc to make food yummy for baby.

Make parboiled carrot sticks the same way as above.
In a pan, add 1 tbsp butter and melt it.
Add the parboiled carrot sticks to butter and saute for a minute.
Add your child’s favourite seasoning to the carrots.
Allow the carrot sticks to cool a bit before serving.
