8 DIY Home Remedies to get rid of Dandruff

Dandruff can be stubborn and those who suffer from it can tell you how irritating and embarrassing it can be. There are  umpteen products in the market and every time you visit a salon for a hair cut, your stylist suggest various hair spas for you. But the price and the uncertainty whether it will actually work or make the problem worse deters you.

It is always best to use DIY home remedies to get rid of dandruff, which you know are not going to make your hair and skin worse. Here we have 5 such simple home remedies made from everyday products from your kitchen pantry.

Hot Oil Therapy

Everyone has heard about this and used it and it works. Heat a natural oil that you use like coconut oil or olive oil and massage your hair with this oil for 15 minutes. Now wrap a hot towel around your head for 10-15 minutes and then wash off.

Hot oil massage relieves dryness of the scalp and prevents scaling which causes dandruff. You can do this hot oil therapy one every week. However, do not let the oil sit on your head for too long as that can aggravate the condition.

Lemon and Curd hair pack

Curd and lemon have anti-fungal properties. Make a hair pack by mixing 1 cup curd with 2 tablespoon lemon juice well. Apply this pack on the scalp and rub it gently. Leave the pack on for about half an hour. Wash off your hair after 30 minutes. You can do this once or twice a week. You can see visible difference after a few applications.

Coconut oil and camphor

This was my mother’s favourite remedy for dandruff when I was a little girl. She always used to add camphor to coconut oil which we then used for regular head massages. This keeps dandruff at bay,

Add a small amount of camphor to your bottle of coconut oil. Camphor cool the scalp and helps in dandruff treatment.

Fenugreek seeds

Fenugreek seeds are one of the most effective remedies for getting rid of dandruff.

Fenugreek seeds (methi) and lemon juice hair mask

Soak half a cup of fenugreek (methi) seeds in water overnight. 

Next morning drain the fenugreek seeds and make a paste.

Mix 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice to the methi seed paste.

Apply this hair mask to your scalp and hair.

Leave the mask for 30 minutes and then wash off.

 

Fenugreek seeds (methi) and curd hair mask

You can also make a hair mask using a mixture fenugreek seeds paste and curd.

Apply this hair mask to your scalp and hair.

Leave the mask for 30 minutes and then wash off.

 

Amla and Tulsi

Make a paste of 2 teaspoons of amla powder with some water. To this add, 10 crushed tulsi leaves. Apply this mixture to scalp and hair, leave for half an hour and wash off using a mild shampoo.

Neem leaves and lemon juice

Make a paste of fresh neem leaves. Add some lemon juice and apply on scalp. Leave it for 20-30 minutes and then was with a mild shampoo.

Neem water rinse

Take a cup of neem leaves and boil them in about 4 cups of water till water becomes half. Cool this water and strain. Rinse your hair with this solution after every wash.

Apple cider vinegar

Mix equal quantities of warm water and apple cider vinger. Apply apple cider vinegar mixture on your scalp using your finger tips or with the help of cotton. Leave on for some time and then rinse off.
