This Mother’s Day, Put Mommy Before Others

Putting other’s needs before their own comes naturally to women. It becomes even more so once they turn mothers. It is always children, husband, parents and other family members before their own needs. Quite often they put their own needs at back burner to make sure others in the family do not face any problem. So, they cook their children’s and husband’s favourite dishes even if they may not like them. They may not even mention their choice of holiday destination when others want to go somewhere else.

And it often leaves them feeling frustrated, under-valued and taken for granted. It is because women have been raised to put other’s needs before their own. So many of my friends feel bad even going for a lunch with friends, if they have to leave their children with father or grandparents.

Self care for mothers

This Mother’s Day , India Gate has started this beautiful initiative called #MomFirst, where mothers are sharing instances where they put themselves first before others.

Here is my #MomFirst story.

Yes!! Mothers should put their own needs before others at times and not feel guilty about it. I have many, many mom first moments in my life. My firm belief is that marriage is a partnership and every member of family should step in to help others whenever necessary.

I go for pilates class three times a week and my husband looks after my daughter. I have even left my daughter with him when I have travelled out of city for work and there haven’t been any hiccups. I have left her with her father even to go catch up with my girl friends without kids tagging along. These are not indulgences but basic necessities to have a good, healthy and happy life. And no one should try telling me otherwise.

All that I do is inform him about the plan in advance so that he can adjust his schedule. He does the same when he needs to travel or has plans where I handle house and child.

For me, Mom First is about putting yourself first at times while taking your family along.

It does not have to be a rivalry or competition but being kind to yourself, taking care of yourself before you feel the dreaded burnout, so that you can take better care of those around you!

What’s your #MomFirst moment?

Very thoughtful subject. We always talk about what we can do for our kids. We try to manage our schedule according to our kid’s routine. But while doing this, we tend to forget our likes and that Me Time. Sometimes it’s okay to be little selfish. As it is good for our mind and soul. Only a fresh mind can function effeciently.

Wonderful post. I know the but out is real !! I cannot tell you how much stress it causes. But since I started working out – taking care of my skin and getting dressed just for the sake of it – I feel more
Confident and happy and it feels good.
