When Can Baby Safely Eat and be Introduced Fish to Baby?
Feeding baby fish
Fish is a very good source of protein. It is considered to be the healthiest non-vegetarian protein source. But it can be confusing when you want to introduce fish in a baby’s diet. Today we answer some of those questions.
What can I introduce fish in my baby’s food?
Fish can be introduced in baby’s diet as early as 8 months. I many parts of India, specially Bengal, it is introduced as early as 6 months. Discuss with your paediatrician, when you want to start fish and start with tiny amounts.
Why is fish good for babies?
Fish is a complete protein source, which means it contains all 9 amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein which are not made by our body but need to be taken as part of food.Â
Fish are also rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids and are good for children as well as adults.
Which fish are safe for babies?
It is best to stick to fresh water fish or mild white fish when baby is just starting to eat fish. Fish like basa, sea bass or bekti, even rohu can be given to babies.
Debone the fish completely, taking extra care to check for tiny bones. Try to use fish which is boneless. If you use a fish like rohm which is common in Bengal, mash it well with your hands to remove any bones at all.
Always use fresh fish. Try not to use frozen fish and certainly not canned fish.
Do not give shellfish like prawns, crabmeat etc. to baby.Â
How to choose fish for baby?
- Choose fresh fish, which is not stale and smelly.
- Fish should be springy to touch.

I wasn’t aware that fish can be served to babies as young as 8 months!I introduced fish to my daughter only once she turned 1.5 years, the basic reason being the fear of tiny bones which go unseen. Loved the recipes mentioned here, fish puree is a tempting one!Thankyou Shishuworld 🙂
Thank you, Megha. Fish can can be given to babies. But you are right, one needs to be very cautious about bones. 🙂
