Must Buy Supplies for cooking for a Baby:

You will need some basic supplies to make fresh food for your baby, till s/he starts eating your regular food. None of these are a waste as I am still using all these in my kitchen, but these were a blessing during that first year when my daughter started eating solids.

  • A small pressure cooker- Buy a small 1.5 -2 litre pressure cooker to make fresh khichdi, dal pani, rice gruel, vegetable purees, soups and what not. I used my little pressure cooker almost every day till my daughter 2 years old. I still use my little hawkins when I have to make something in small quantities. It is also handy to carry when you are travelling.

  • Potato Masher – A must have for mashing your baby’s food till needed. then you can use it to mash your bhaji, potatoes or anything else.

Useful Tips for First Time Mommies:

  • It is very important to clean baby’s utensils when s/he is just starting solids. Keep baby’s utensils separate and ensure they are not used for anything else.
  • Wash the utensils with soap and water after every use.
  • To sterilise the bowls, bring water in a large pan to a boil. Turn off the heat and put the utensils in boiling water and then keep covered  till use.
  • Always follow 3 day wait rule when introducing new food item. Read more about 3 day wait rule here.
  • Do not get disheartened, if your baby does not accept what you offer. All babies are different and take different times to adjust to solid food.
  • Do not worry about the quantity of food consumed. Baby’s nutrition is still primarily coming from BM or formula, so don’t worry if baby is eating just a spoonful or two.
  • If you feel baby is losing weight, do mention it to your paediatrician. Read 7 reasons why there might a sudden weight loss or weight gain in babies
  • Record your baby’s food intake and doctor’s visit using Trackmemom, a free online tool.

  1. Thank you for this chart. My baby is 6 months old and I was looking for a food chart for him. This will help me in introducing solids to him. Can you also advise some recipes for weaning.

  2. Megha Gopan

This is lovely initiative from you,Priya.I’m sure so many new mothers have no idea of how to start solids for their 6 month old, especially those like me who stay away from family and have no one as such to guide. For my little one, I had started off by giving a spoon of ragi porridge for breakfast. She refused to eat initially but gradually developed taste.I added a pinch of jaggery to it for her to like.
