Disposable Diapers Vs. Cloth Diapers

Disposable diapers vs. Cloth diapers

Disposable diapers vs. cloth diapers – Reena and Sheela are friends and both are mothers to newborn babies. Reena has been advised by her mother to use cloth diapers for her son while Sheela plans to use disposable diapers for her daughter. However, both are still confused about their choice.

They decide to put forward their reasons and weigh the pros  and cons of disposable diapers vs. cloth diapers before coming to a decision.

Sheela’s Arguments – Disposables

Reena’s arguments – Cloth

Use and throw. Convenient. Sheela is very busy and staying on her own means she does not want added work of washing up diapers.

Reusable. Reena stays at home and has her mother and help at home. She knows she can wash and use cloth diapers as many times as she wants. She even plans to reuse the same for her next baby.

No laundry needed.Sheela works and does not have help at home, she wants to reduce her workload.

Detergent , water, electricity required for washing. She even plans to reuse for her second baby. Reena understands that there is expenditure on detergent, water and electricity as well as paying help to wash.

Not good for Environment. Sheela agrees that using disposables leads to a lot of non-biodegradable waste and is not good for environment

Environment friendly. Reena thinks it is better to use cloth as it is reusable and hence better for environment.

More Expensive. Sheela concedes that she will end up spending a huge amount on diapers as babies can use upto and more than 10 diapers a day and diapers are quite expensive.

Less expensive. Reena knows after initial expense on buying cloth diapers and nappies and probably in between to upgrade sizes, she does not have to spend much on them again. She can also reuse them for her next baby, so they will turn out to be less expensive in the long run.

Baby remains dry for longer periods. Sheela thinks disposable ensures babies are dry for longer times even if you forget to check them once in a while.

Less diaper rash. Reena has heard babies who wear cloth diapers have less incidence of diaper rash as it is easier to monitor them.

Disposable diapers are very handy when you are travelling with baby

Babies get toilet trained easily. Reena has heard babies in cloth diapers get toilet trained earlier.

Finally, they decide that this has to be a personal choice for parents. The decision will have an impact on  baby’s health, environment, parents’ finances and time. You should understand the pros and cons of both kinds and then take a decision.

In India, parents usually combine both kinds, use disposable ones while going out and cloth diapers at home. Many parents put their babies to sleep in disposable diapers to ensure longer sleep.
