3 Atta Halwa Recipes for Babies and Toddlers/ Whole wheat porridge for babies

Atta halwa for babies – Atta is whole wheat flour used to make chapatis. This is a great way to introduce wheat to your baby. This can replace commercially available wheat-based cereals in market. Atta halwa is also known as lapsi in some places. Lapsi is also made from dahlia or broken wheat.

When my daughter was a baby, I tried to avoid packaged cereals as much as possible and tried to replace them with homemade options. Rice was easy as you can cook it well and mash or make many kinds of khichdi to combine dal, rice and vegetables too. When it was time to start wheat, I opted for this simple atta halwa. I followed and recommend no salt, no sugar diet for babies till 1 year and my daughter has had no issues. She still does not like too much sugar in her food and I believe that first year was in a way responsible for this.

Atta halwa for babies (7 months+) (no sugar)

This atta halwa with no sugar is a great way to introduce wheat in your baby’s diet. It is very good first food and homemade wholewheat cereal.

Ingredients

2 teaspoons Atta (whole wheat flour)

1/2 tsp ghee

2 cups hot water

Baby’s milk (breastmilk or formula)

Recipe

  • Heat ghee in a pan.
  • Roast atta in a pan, stirring continuously else it can burn.
  • Once atta is roasted a little and gives off nice aroma, add hot water.
  • Keep stirring to avoid lumps.
  • Bring it to your desired consistency for the baby. It should be a little thin as it keeps getting thicker once it cools down.
  • Your baby will love the smooth texture.
  • Turn off the heat.
  • Once the atta halwa is a little cool, add baby’s milk to adjust consistency and also add flavour to halwa.

Tips:

  • You may add banana puree or applesauce to atta halwa to add sweetness naturally.
  • You may also add ghee at the end to make it smooth.
  • Once the baby is over 8 months, you may also add a little cardamom powder for fragrance and taste.
  • You may also add cut raisins if your baby likes them.
  • After 1 year, you also add nuts after baby has turned 1.
  • You can also add cooked carrot puree to this for a different taste.
